Our favorite thing about this place is getting to share in your journey!
Back in April, personal trainer Dayna Springer posted about a victory she got to share in with of the gals she trains. Thanks for sharing Dayna, and WAY TO GO JULIE! "I would like to honor my client and good friend Julie Edwards! She competed today in the Special Olympics 100 and 200 Meter Fast Walking Event. She has worked so hard every week for past 5 months, that we have been training and it definitely showed today! She took home the 3rd Place🥉Bronze Metal for the 100 Meter and a 4th Place Ribbon for the 200 Meter! Way to go Julie!!!! I'm so proud of you! 2019 we're coming for the GOLD!!!" -Dayna by Kristi Rambo
Motivation Surround yourself with people who share your goals and reap the results! A study in the Journal of Social Sciences shows that participants gravitate towards the behavior of those around them. “The Köhler Effect is the idea that no one wants to be the weakest link in a group setting” (NBC News). You’ll naturally push yourself harder when you work out with people fitter than yourself. You’re also more likely to spend more time working out if you have other people to do it with (Society of Behavioral Medicine). Community Do you have a workout buddy? A group fitness class is a comfortable, welcoming environment where you can make friends for class or for life. Social interaction can provide encouragement and motivation during exercise (Los Angeles Times). Plus, smiling releases endorphins, and who doesn’t want a mood boost while working out? Accountability Group fitness is one way to help you stick to a plan. Commitment leads to consistency, says NBC News, and you’re more likely to show up if someone will notice when you don’t. Another study found that 95% of those who started a weight-loss program with friends completed the program, vs. 76% of those recruited alone. Expertise You want your time spent at the gym to be effective, safe, and without guesswork (American Council on Exercise). A group fitness instructor does the planning for you, coaches you to great results, and helps you avoid injury. This is why we have a team of certified trainers with specialized areas of expertise. Variety According to a TIME article, variety can help you love working out, which is the best way to stay consistent. In a rut? Change it up and try a different class. (We have over 100 to choose from every week!) "My name is Helena and I am a personal trainer at Riverside Health Club. I am a certified fitness trainer, ISSA (international sport sciences association) certified, a certified nutrition trainer, ISSA (international sport sciences association) a certified specialist in strength and conditioning, ISSA (international sport sciences association) and I am certified in TRX basics. About 3 years ago, I began focusing my training on Olympic weight lifting. When I started I remember barely being able to snatch 85lbs, and 135lbs in my clean and jerk was monumental for me. I competed in my first competition in February of 2016. In that meet I finished with a 53kg (~117lbs) snatch and a 75kg (165lb) clean & jerk. I competed in two more meets in 2016, finishing off the year's meets with (at the time) a personal best of 61kg (~134lb) snatch and an 83kg (~183lb) clean and jerk. I had never had any sort of formal coaching, it was simply Leland (a trainer at Riverside Health Club) and myself working together to get better at something we were both pretty new at. After 2016 I took a long hiatus due to a hip injury. I went through multiple months of physical therapy to fix me up. I could only work on light weight and form basically during this time. Around February 2017 I was back in the game and started training to get my strength back. Then August 2017 I had to lay off of the lifting and focus on my college volleyball season that went through November. I came back in December 2017, harder and more determined than ever. At this point Leland and I had stopped working together as I had surpassed his Olympic weightlifting coaching ability to help me as an Olympic lifting athlete (this is not his specialty as a trainer), so this is where the real learning experience began for me. Since then, I have been almost 100% self trained. My current training PR for my snatch is 70kg (154lbs) and my clean & jerk is sitting at 93kg (~205lbs). I now comfortably lift my previous PR meet numbers, regularly. I'm finally healthy and my strength is back. It's time for another meet! I have learned so much and I don't want to keep it to myself! If you're a beginner just getting started, or if you're ready to take it to the next level - get in contact with me by entering your info below and I will get you where you want to go!" Back in February we highlighted Luke Pusateri, then 15, who was gunning for the Philippine Junior National Team. Luke spends 2 hours, 6 days a week, 11+ months out of the year training to make his dreams come true, and he does a lot of that training right here in our pool with RHC trainer, Carol Mochkatel! Today we get to share a very exciting update: Luke was selected to the Philippine Junior National Team! He’ll be competing for the Philippines in the South-East Asia Age Group Games in the Philippines this year from July 6- 8. He’ll be swimming 200 meter breaststroke, 100 meter breaststroke and 50 meter breaststroke for the 16 – 18 age group. Also, possibly some relays, still be decided by PSI. In order to be selected, he had to have one of the top two times in an event between January 1, 2018 and May 6, 2018. Other countries competing are; Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Brunei, Cambodia, and Singapore. Quite the feat and he’s only 16! Congratulations Luke and Carol, we're so proud!
